What is the EMMETT Technique?

What is the EMMETT Technique?

Do you experience neck and shoulder restrictions, back and hip pain, migraines or persistent headaches, abdominal cramps, fluid retention or even pain in your heel or foot, knee or ankle?

These are some of the symptoms that our therapist Maria has helped people with using the EMMETT Technique - but what is it?

It is a unique form of body therapy. A safe and simple muscle release therapy which can be used to address pain and discomfort and improve movement restrictions.

It is a method that uses light finger pressure at specific locations to initiate the gentle release of tension in many problem areas such as neck, shoulder and back and results are usually immediate. These specific points, referred to as “EMMETT points” are different to traditional trigger points or acupressure points.

EMMETT therapists

Maria Franklin is an EMMETT Therapist who works out of the Centre for Integral Health.

She says: “EMMETT is about applying the right amount of pressure, in the right direction for the right amount of time.

“It is this combination of elements, unique to each individual, which creates the desired physical change which is often immediate.

“I have always been fascinated by the body and how such a complex system knows how to grow, develop and maintain itself. Physical symptoms are our body’s way of telling us that something is not quite right, and the Emmett Technique is one of the ways that allows me to start to address problems at the level, or levels, they arise.”

Is it done with massage oils?

Although often combined with other techniques, the EMMETT Technique is an efficient and effective therapy on its own. It is non-invasive and involves no drugs, massage oils, manipulations or high velocity thrusts. Emmett Technique can also be used as a relaxing maintenance treatment.

Where did it come from?

Ross Emmett, the founder of the EMMETT Technique, has been in clinical practice since 1981, treating over 100 clients a week and now travels throughout the world lecturing and holding seminars on his unique insights into bodywork.

Highly intuitive with incredible observational skills, his varied upbringing, experiences and interests, as well as his dyslexia have all, he believes, contributed to the therapy that is today The EMMETT Technique.

Through the support and respect of his medical colleagues Ross was one of the first massage therapists in Australia to be registered for medical rebates. Ross brought his method to England in 2007 and since then his technique has gone global and courses are now run in over 20 countries around the world.
